  • Dr. Sudekum is a St. Louis native who has undergone extensive training to become board-certified in both plastic surgery and hand surgery.

  • 1974 graduate of DeSmet Jesuit High School.

  • Undergraduate degree in Marine Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

  • Taught Marine Biology in Southern California at the Catalina Island Marine Institute.

  • Research diver and marine biologist at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

  • Masters degree in Marine Zoology, where his thesis dealt with the ecology and behavior of coral reef sharks and fishes in the Hawaiian archipelago.

  • Medical school at the University of Missouri at Columbia, graduating in 1987.

  • Completed his post-graduate internship and residency in General Surgery at Stanford University Hospital in California.

  • Awarded a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at Stanford and then a Clinical Fellowship and Residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.

  • Post-graduate surgical training with a Fellowship in Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western University Hospital.

The Practice

  • Dr. Sudekum founded Midwest Special Surgery in 1996.

  • Midwest Special Surgery specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic injuries and conditions of hand, wrist and elbow as well as plastic surgery procedures.

  • Dr. Sudekum also founded Outpatient Surgical Services, which develops and manages office-based specialty surgery centers.

  • Dr. Sudekum’s practice, Midwest Special Surgery, and Outpatient Surgical Services is located at the Missouri Hand Center, a new, state of the art facility located in O’Fallon, Missouri

  • In his clinical practice, he sees a variety of patients with both simple and complex bony and soft tissue conditions affecting the upper extremity.

  • His patients come from all over Missouri, Illinois and the Midwest. He frequently performs second opinions, independent medical examinations and secondary surgical procedures at the request of patients, attorneys, the courts, insurance companies and employers.

  • He is frequently invited to speak for various organizations throughout the world on subjects relating to hand/elbow injuries, upper extremity diseases and workers compensation hand and elbow issues.

Personal Interest

  • Dr. Sudekum enjoys traveling, mountaineering, skiing, fly fishing, scuba diving and surfing.

  • He is an active volunteer with both Interplast, Inc., an organization which performs free reconstructive surgery in underdeveloped countries, and Surfaid International, an organization which provides free medical care to third-world oceanic communities.
